Sealants are shallow fillings placed on the chewing surfaces of back teeth before a cavity is present. By placing a sealant shortly after the tooth erupts, you significantly reduce the chance that a cavity will form because the sealant covers up the area of the tooth most prone to cavities. Sealants are most commonly used on children and numbing is not needed for the procedure
